Today’s Exercise is

Blackout Poetry

  • Objective: To find poetry in existing text and create striking visual and verbal images.
  • How to Play:
    1. Each person gets a page of text from an old book, newspaper, or magazine and a dark marker.
    2. They scan the page for anchor words or phrases that catch their eye.
    3. They then “black out” the rest of the text with the marker, leaving only their chosen words visible. The remaining words form a poem.
  • Best for: Overcoming the fear of the blank page, developing an eye for evocative language.
