The Writer’s Playground Series – The Emotional Impact Report

Thank you for joining us in The Writer’s Playground series!

Here we run through writing games to spark imagination and sharpen your craft.

Today’s Exercise is

The Emotional Impact Report

  • Objective: To give feedback on the emotional effect of a story, rather than its technical mechanics.
  • How to Play: A writer reads a piece aloud. Listeners are not allowed to give typical critique. Instead, they must report on the specific emotions they felt and where in the story they felt them (e.g., “The description of the rainy street made me feel melancholic,” “The twist in the dialogue made me feel a jolt of surprise”).
  • Best for: Understanding reader response, emotional clarity, and impact-focused revision.
