The Writer’s Playground Series – Two Truths and a Lie

Thank you for joining us in The Writer’s Playground series!

Here we run through writing games to spark imagination and sharpen your craft.

Today’s Exercise is

Two Truths and a Lie (Memoir Edition)

  • Objective: To practice crafting believable, detailed, and compelling narrative voice in non-fiction.
  • How to Play:
    1. Each person in the group writes down three short, compelling anecdotes from their life in paragraph form. Two must be completely true, and one must be a well-crafted fabrication.
    2. One by one, they read their three stories aloud.
    3. The rest of the group votes on which story they believe is the lie. The ensuing discussion about why certain stories felt more “true” than others is a masterclass in narrative detail and authenticity.
  • Best for: Narrative voice, authentic detail, and understanding the craft of “truthful” storytelling.
