Today’s Exercise is

Texture Board

  • Objective: To expand descriptive vocabulary by trans-lating tactile sensations into character and setting details.
  • How to Play:
    1. Create a “texture board” or a “mystery bag” with several items possessing distinct textures (e.g., sandpaper, a piece of silk, a cold stone, velcro, tree bark).
    2. Each writer touches one of the items without looking at it.
    3. They then have 10 minutes to write a paragraph describing a character, a location, or an atmosphere using words and concepts inspired by that tactile sensation. For example, a “sandpaper” character might have a rough voice and abrasive personality, while a “silk” setting might be luxurious but treacherous.
  • Best for: Metaphorical thinking, expanding descriptive language, and characterization.
