The Writer’s Playground Series – The Heist Crew

Thank you for joining us in The Writer’s Playground series!

Here we run through writing games to spark imagination and sharpen your craft.

Today’s Exercise is

The Heist Crew

  • Objective: To create purposeful characters that must interact with a team.
  • How to Play:
    1. The group decides on a high-stakes goal (e.g., “stealing the Hope Diamond,” “hacking into a rival corporation’s server,” “rescuing a pet from an evil billionaire’s mansion”).
    2. Each person is responsible for creating one member of the crew needed for the job. They must define:
      • Their name and specialty (e.g., The Hacker, The Muscle, The Face).
      • A unique tool they use.
      • A secret they are keeping from the rest of the team.
    3. Each person introduces their character to the group. The fun is seeing how the different specialists and their secrets would clash or combine.
  • Best for: Character creation, ensemble dynamics, and plot brainstorming.

Dream up your own high-stakes heist, or use one of the ideas from the list below to gather your crew and plot your mission:

Now, select your Specialty. Here’s a list to get you started:

Infiltration & Stealth

  2. The Master of Disguise: A social chameleon who can flawlessly impersonate anyone, from a security guard to a foreign diplomat, using costumes, makeup, and mimicry.
  3. The Safecracker (or Boxman): A master of locks, tumblers, and timers. Can open anything from a simple deadbolt to a state-of-the-art bank vault.
  4. The Scout (or Recon Expert): The eyes of the team before the job. Gathers intelligence, analyzes blueprints, times guard patrols, and finds the perfect point of entry.

Technical & Digital

  1. The Hacker (or Netrunner): The ghost in the machine. Disables digital security, loops camera footage, drains accounts, and creates digital diversions.
  2. The Gadgeteer (or Engineer): The “Q” of the crew. Designs and builds custom, non-standard equipment tailored for the specific challenges of the job.
  3. The Comms Expert: Manages the team’s secure communication network during the operation, preventing jams and listening in on enemy chatter.

Physical & Enforcement

  1. The Muscle (or Enforcer): The intimidating physical powerhouse of the team. Handles guards, breaks down doors, and provides close-quarters protection.
  2. The Driver (or Wheelman): A virtuoso behind the wheel of any vehicle—car, boat, or plane. The master of the high-speed getaway.
  3. The Demolitions Expert (or Sapper): A specialist in the precise application of explosives to breach walls, open vaults, or create diversions.
  4. The Marksman (or Overwatch): The team’s eyes from a distance. Provides cover, intelligence, and synchronized takedowns from a hidden vantage point.

Intellectual & Wildcard

  1. The Mastermind (or Architect): The brains of the opera-tion. Plans every detail, anticipates contingencies, and directs the crew during the heist.
  2. The Appraiser: The subject matter expert. Can spot a fake from the real thing, knows the history of the target, and can handle priceless objects without damaging them.
  3. The Inside Man (or Mole): An employee or contact alrea-dy inside the target location, providing critical access and last-minute intel.
  4. The Chemist: A specialist in creating useful chemical compounds, from sleeping gas and fast-acting acids to smoke bombs and knockout agents.
  5. The Wildcard: An unpredictable operator with a strange, niche talent (e.g., animal training, ventriloquism, sheer dumb luck) who can solve problems no one else can.
