Today’s Exercise is
The Monologue Challenge
- Objective: To reveal deep character truths through their interpretation of a mundane subject.
- How to Play:
- The facilitator provides two things to each writer: a character archetype (e.g., “The Deposed King,” “The Retired Assassin,” “The Failed Inventor”) and a simple, everyday object or situation (e.g., “a dripping faucet,” “a mismatched pair of socks,” “a weed growing through the pavement”).
- Each writer has 10 minutes to write a monologue from their character’s perspective. The character should only be talking about the object, but their words should reveal everything about their past, their fears, and their personality.
- Best for: Subtext, character depth, voice.
